An evening with Katja Hoyer in conversation with Iain MacGregor: ‘Weimar: Life on the Edge of Catastrophe’

On Thursday 7th May 2026 at Waterstones Gower Street, the German-British historian and journalist Katja Hoyer will be in conversation with author and historian Iain McGregor, discussing her new book Weimar: Life on the Edge of Catastrophe!

“If we are to avoid the mistakes made by people in the past, the first step is to understand why they were made. Democracy and civilisation are maintained or destroyed by the choices we make as individuals and as societies. No amount of history, tradition and culture is sufficient to safeguard against the takeover of a ruthless totalitarian ideology. There is no better case study of this than Weimar between the wars.

An unforgettable picture of lives and choices in extraordinary circumstances, Weimar takes us deep into the heart of the storm – to the town that dreamt of a better world, and woke up to tyranny.”
